June 2026
On 22 June, the Barcelona PID Foundation held the III Virtual Meeting on Newborn Screening for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) in Spain and Portugal, with the support of The Binding Site.
The meeting brought together leading healthcare professionals from across Spain and Portugal to exchange experiences, discuss challenges, and share key lessons learned from the implementation of SCID newborn screening programmes.
The agenda covered essential topics, including screening protocols, patient follow-up, clinical care pathways, referral to specialised clinical units, and the main challenges associated with implementing these public health programmes.
One of the highlights of the meeting was the roundtable discussion, where representatives from Catalonia, Galicia, the Canary Islands, Madrid, Portugal, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Aragon, Asturias, and the Balearic Islands shared their experiences and insights gained during the rollout of newborn screening in their respective regions.
The Barcelona PID Foundation would like to thank all the speakers, moderators, and attendees for their valuable participation. Meetings like this strengthen collaboration among professionals and play a key role in advancing the equitable, high-quality implementation of newborn screening, with the ultimate goal of ensuring early diagnosis and improved care for all children with SCID.
